PET rats are the sweetest and perhaps the smartest of little creatures, I tell ya. And unlike what way to many people love to think, PET rats do not have diseases nor do they carry the black plague. I too owned PET rats, several years ago, and I too was able to learn them a few tricks in no time. They responded to their name in only a few hours and will find you when calling them. They are very food orientated, and will almost anything for a treat. They absolutely LOVE treats. Heck, they were smarter than any dog I have ever owned, for crying out loud! It's a shame that don't grow to become old though, as in 10+ years. Mine died from cancer after barely 2 years, because they had been inbred too much by the pet store where I got them (bred to become snake food). Notice that I say PET rats. Rats that live in sewers and all that - hence wild rats - do carry all sorts of diseases that can harm humans, not only due to the environment they live in and their diet. Pet rats also have somewhat different genetics although at first glance they look a lot like wild rats. Only a "trained" eye will see and know the difference. And wild rats tend to be aggressive/defensive too towards other living things, they WILL get defensive and attack when frightened or startled enough. Pet rats are pretty much the complete opposite. One negative side about pet rats is that they are incontinent - just like the wild rats - and that male rats do stink up the place in no time unless you constantly clean up after them (get that bucket with disinfectant with flowery scent ready, for real). So avoid as much as possible to let them run over your best clothing, or brand-new expensive couch or fancy carpet, specially the males. And please don't keep them around small children, since small children tend to put everything they find in their mouth. And thoroughly clean their cage, food bowls and toys, … every single day. Keeping pet rats is incredible lots of fun, but it does come at a price. :) Cheers!

Indeed. My Luna has the same Dumbo ears and black and white coloration as that rat. But she's almost 2 years old, so I probably won't try to do any fancy tricks with her. She's smart enough to figure out the food puzzle we put in the cage at least.
