Child prodigies often don't succeed at math later on for a few reasons. First, pure math is about proofs, not calculation, which requires a lot of patience, and attention to detail, not just calculation skill. Second, a lot of prodigies don't need to work hard. Terence Tao, possibly the smartest mathematician alive, almost failed his PhD because he didn't study enough. Finally, a lot of them end up working in industry making millions modelling stockmarkets and such, instead of research.

One of their kids, a 3-year-old, was fussy about being left behind by her parents, so they quietly slipped away for a fun day at the beach by themselves. When my niece woke up, I told her they would be back soon, she was upset. When they returned, she said accusingly to them, ''' you never even said goodbye''' That simple sentence broke my heart' .
