Yea you’d be surprised. 😢My cousin who is an adult now (in her 50’s) was born deaf and my uncle never really learned anything. For her whole life! One of my cousins is a really fast finger speller so they could have conversations and my aunt (her mom) learned very basic, minimal signs. Another aunt who is not her mom actually learned the most and was trying to teach the rest of the family but sadly, it wasn’t a priority for them. There were 5 kids and my uncle was always gone as a truck driver and my aunt was completely overwhelmed. They relied heavily on the teachers at school to communicate everything and be the translators for them. They lived in a different state from us growing so we never saw them and I’m quite a lot younger than all of them anyway and even as a small child I thought it was wrong that none of them took the time to properly communicate with her. 😢As a result she suffered a lot of abuse as a child at the hands of other adults who were left in charge of taking care of her for large stretches at a time. It’s really sad.

Years ago, I learned that the more profoundly deaf a person was, the harder it was for a person to learn speech, and my college buddy could not figure it out. His family only developed some home signs and wrote to him. It seemed to cause trust issues with the Hearing. I thought his case was the exception, but have read that it is pretty common for parents to not learn ASL. I don't get it. Such a beautiful language, and so important.
